Maple Leafs, Raptors Reception Of H1N1 Vaccine Being Investigated

Ontario Government Investigating If Raptors
Players Jumped Line For H1N1 Flu Shots
Ontario Minister of Health & Long-Term Care Deb Matthews Thursday said that the Ontario government is "investigating whether players" on the Maple Leafs and Raptors "jumped the queue for increasingly scarce H1N1 flu shots," according to Robert Benzie of the TORONTO STAR. Matthews added that the province is "'getting the facts' to determine who administered the vaccine to some players and staffers at the hockey and basketball clubs" (TORONTO STAR, 11/6). Toronto Public Health Media Relations Coordinator Susan Sperling said that the agency "did not distribute H1N1 vaccine or set up a special clinic for either" the Maple Leafs or Raptors. Meanwhile, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly in an e-mail said that "amid the public outcry that hockey players were being shown preferential treatment by getting the shots," it is the "responsibility of all 30 clubs to proceed in the best interests of their individual team." Daly: "We encourage all clubs to get their players vaccinated to the extent it is possible and feasible. But it's up to each club to assess its own particular circumstances in terms of timing and logistics" (TORONTO SUN, 11/6).

DIFFICULT TO GET: The CP's Jim Morris noted Canadian Olympic Committee Chief Medical Officer Bob McCormack "failed in an attempt to convince the public health officers for several provinces that winter athletes should be considered a high-risk group." McCormack: "The problems there [have] been with the distribution of the vaccine (and) the heightened media attention, has really made it a challenge. We haven't been able to achieve what we hoped." Canadiens VP/Communications & Community Relations Donald Beauchamp said that "to date none of the team's players have been vaccinated" (CP, 11/5).
