ESPN To Air More, Shorter Commercials During NASCAR Coverage

Feinberg Says ESPN Experimenting With
Slotting Commercials During NASCAR Events
ESPN VP/Motorsports Rich Feinberg said that the net, beginning with its coverage of the Nationwide Series Camping World 300 at Daytona Int'l Speedway on Saturday, "will slot commercials at times that annoy viewers the least" for all NASCAR events, according to Richard Huff of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Feinberg added that the net "may take more frequent but shorter breaks this year," though he could not give an exact number. Feinberg: "It will be noticeable, and hopefully will increase time spent viewing, which is time spent in front of the TV." He said that ESPN "did a study after last season to see where the breaks came" during races and how viewing patterns "may have changed during telecasts." Feinberg: "Obviously commercials are part of our business. They're necessary. ... We went back and looked at the length of the break, track by track." Huff notes NASCAR producers end up "guessing when they can break away from the action without missing too much, or else they wait until everything slows after an accident" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/14).

EVERNHAM: Gillett Evernham Motorsports co-Owner Ray Evernham will join the net's NASCAR coverage as an analyst. Evernham, who will make his debut this week, will appear on “NASCAR Now” and “NASCAR Countdown,” as well as work as an analyst in ESPN’s booth for the Nationwide Series races in Mexico City and Loudon, New Hampshire (ESPN).

FOX INNOVATIONS: Fox has installed four small, stationary HD POV cameras, called "Gopher Cams," underneath the track at Daytona Int'l Speedway for the 50th running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday. The Gopher Cams mark the first time a sub-track surface camera will be HD quality and have been placed at each of the track's four turns (Fox). Also, USA TODAY's Michael Hiestand reported Fox will debut a new theme song Sunday called "NASCAR Love," whose lyrics "include a 'love' for 'when they're making lots and lots of noise'" (USA TODAY, 2/13).
