Listen Up: NBA Coaches To Be Miked During National Broadcasts

Skiles Feels Microphones On Coaches,
In-Game Interviews Are Unnecessary
The NBA, beginning this week, is requiring coaches to wear a microphone during national games and do one in-game interviews, and there "will also be a camera in the locker room to look in on pregame and halftime meetings," according to Mike McGraw of the Illinois DAILY HERALD.  Bulls coach Scott Skiles, who will be miked for the first time during a game against the Pistons on ESPN Friday, said, "I'm not a fan of it. I'm told to do it, so I do it. I think it's unnecessary. It's not going to hinder me from doing anything." Skiles added, "I don't know that I'd be comfortable [as a player] being frank with the coach if I knew he was miked and it could be on TV. Quotes get taken out of context. And people make judgments on those quotes" (Illinois DAILY HERALD, 12/1). The league in '00 tried to mandate coaches wear microphones for national broadcasts, but backed down after several coaches complained about the policy (THE DAILY).

FED UP: In N.Y., Grace & Schapiro reported that in the first quarter of the Knicks' 104-59 loss against the Celtics last Thursday, Knicks fan Edward Barnes "made a bet with [TNT's Craig] Sager that if his team went down by 50 points he would give up his coveted jersey." Word of the bet "spread through the crowd,"  and when the Knicks fell down by 40 points in the fourth quarter, fans at TD Banknorth Garden yelled, "Throw it!" When the Celtics' lead reached 50 with about three minutes remaining in the game, Barnes, "in a move captured on national television, ... ripped off his $220 Knicks jersey and chucked it onto the court in disgust" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/2).
