NBC Committed To Notre Dame Despite Team's Troubles

NBC's Nielsen Ratings For Notre Dame
Home Games Down 46% So Far This Season
NBC is averaging a 2.1 Nielsen rating through three Notre Dame home football games this season, down 46% from a 3.9 average in '06, according to Ed Sherman of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE.  Notre Dame is 1-6 this season.  Saturday's USC-Notre Dame game "will do a respectable number," but "the remainder of the home schedule looks bleak for NBC" with games against Navy, Air Force and Duke.  NBC began its association with the school in '91, and the current deal to air all Notre Dame home games runs through the 2010 season at $9M per year.  When asked whether the net will continue its involvement with the school, NBC Sports President Ken Schanzer said, "We'd like to make a deal with Notre Dame forever."  Meanwhile, Sherman notes that NBC's "Saturday Night Live" "did a great spoof" of the relationship, airing a "fake promo hyping NBC's coverage of the Irish." Schanzer said, "The people at ['SNL'] are good friends of mine. I never said anything to them, and they never said anything to me. The good news is that if they're going to use you as a subject for their material, you have to be big enough so people recognize who you are" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/18).
