DEI, Ginn Racing Working On Deal To Merge Teams

DEI and Ginn Racing are “working on a merger agreement that, if finalized, would meld the two NASCAR organizations into a single company,” according to multiple sources cited by Marty Smith of ESPN.com.  The deal “entails several obstacles, including how best to reduce from six Nextel Cup teams to the maximum four.”  Sources said that the “obvious answer … would be to eliminate Ginn's financially-strapped Nos. 13 and 14 teams.”  Ginn Racing CEO & GM Jay Frye "expects to have the company shored up by the next Nextel Cup race” – the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on July 29 (ESPN.com, 7/16).  ESPN’s Angelique Chengelis noted the merger could “strengthen” DEI and “probably give them some more resources in terms of land and property.  They need to expand their shop” (“NASCAR Now,” ESPN2, 7/16).

KAHNE/EVERNHAM: While reports have Anheuser-Busch's Budweiser brand in talks to sponsor the No. 9 Evernham Motorsports Dodge of Kasey Kahne next season, SPEEDTV’s Tom Jensen cited sources as saying that McDonald’s, already an associate sponsor of the car, could become primary sponsor. Another sponsor reportedly “looking closely at Kahne’s car” is Coca-Cola, whose recently-acquired vitaminwater brand is endorsed by Kahne.  Meanwhile, a source said that Evernham’s partnership agreement with Canadiens Owner George Gillett Jr. is “expected to close next week” (SPEEDTV.com, 7/15).
