ESPN To Use Multiple Platforms To Cover Beckham Debut

ESPN Using Multiple Platforms To Cover
Beckham's July 21 Debut With Galaxy
ESPN will use its multiple platforms to cover David Beckham’s debut with the MLS Galaxy against English Premier League club Chelsea FC on July 21 at The Home Depot Center.  Gameday coverage will include pre-match reports on the 6:00pm ET "SportsCenter" and an expanded 30-minute edition of the show focusing on Beckham at 7:00pm.  At 7:30pm, ESPN will air a one-hour documentary titled, “David Beckham: New Beginnings.”  A 30-minute pre-game show hosted by Rob Stone with analyst Julie Foudy will be followed by the 9:00pm kickoff.  The net will use 19 cameras for the game including a skycam, super slo-mo cameras and robotic goal cams.  Saints RB Reggie Bush, who is featured in adidas’ new “Futbol vs. Football” campaign with Beckham, will join play-by-play commentator Dave O’Brien and analysts Eric Wynalda and Tommy Smyth in the booth to discuss the campaign.  ESPN360.com will show the game from a camera isolated on Beckham and will provide stats and bio information.  During the week leading up to his debut, there will be coverage on ESPNews, ESPN.com and ESPNSoccernet.com.  Also, ESPN will launch a new soccer-specific campaign around Beckham’s MLS debut.  The campaign, titled “Hello, Goodbye,” debuts Monday during ESPN’s telecast of the MLB State Farm Home Run Derby at 8:00pm and will run through July 21.  The campaign will also include a print component (ESPN).

THE BRITISH ARE WATCHING: Beckham's journey to the U.S. will be chronicled for a television show in the U.K. set to air July 25.  "David Beckham's Soccer USA" will air on British Channel Five and will follow him on and off the field, according to The Sun. A deal is being completed for the show to air in the U.S. on a national cable network. It is being produced by Tupelo Honey Productions in conjunction with Soccer United Marketing and 19 Entertainment, which represents Beckham (Tripp Mickle, SportsBusiness Journal).
