Historic Mile LLC Conditionally Approved As
Milwaukee Mile's Newest Racing Promoter
In Milwaukee, Dave Kallmann reports the Milwaukee Mile "will have a new racing promoter Friday, assuming it pays off NASCAR for races next season by Thursday." The State Fair Park BOD "gave conditional approval Monday to a contract with Historic Mile LLC." The BOD voted unanimously to "finish the deal if the park hears from NASCAR by 3 p.m. Friday that money has been placed in escrow." State Fair interim Exec Dir Craig Barkelar: "I think the board discussed their management plan, and it is different enough where it appears it would have a good opportunity to succeed with NASCAR being the one big weekend they have, and the car clubs and the other activities that run throughout the year." Kallmann notes the IRL has said that it "won't return" to the track before '11 (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 9/29).

MONEY MATTERS: Jackson County (MO) Sports Complex Authority (JCSCA) Exec Dir Jim Rowland yesterday told the County Legislature that Kauffman Stadium renovations "had reached $261[M]." Jackson County Legislature Budget Chair Henry Rizzo said that taxpayers "won't be footing the bill for extra costs," as he noted that any spending beyond the $250M budget "would be the responsibility of the Royals." Royals Senior VP/Business Operations Kevin Uhlich said that the club does not "expect to spend much beyond" its original $25M pledge. He said that the final figure is "expected to climb close" to $270M (K.C. STAR, 9/29).

DOWN BY THE BAY: The S.F. BUSINESS TIMES' Jim Gardner reports Oakland's second purchase of 12.4 acres next to the Oakland Coliseum "has set tongues wagging that the city is quietly setting the stage to move forward with the Raiders' proposed replacement of the Oakland Coliseum -- possibly roping in the 49ers as well." The Raiders have proposed a new stadium at the Coliseum's existing site as the "eventual centerpiece of a retail and recreation center, which would require additional land beyond the stadium itself." City of Oakland Redevelopment Dir Gregory Hunter said that the city has "not initiated any plans or discussions, but would be open to the possibility if the teams were to approach the city with a proposal" (S.F. BUSINESS TIMES, 9/25 issue).
