ISC Hopes To Break Ground On New Hard
Rock Hotel & Casino In Kansas In Early '09
ISC Thursday told analysts that the first phase of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino at Kansas Speedway "might not open until late next year." ISC CFO Dan Houser said that the company's "goal was to have the interim casino open by the track's big NASCAR Sprint Cup series race," set for October 4, 2009. ISC indicated that a "groundbreaking could take place in January or February." Speedway President Jeff Boerger said that the "plans appear to be leaning toward building the permanent casino first and opening it next year -- by June, if possible" (K.C. STAR, 10/10).

STILL IN THE RUNNING? In Louisville, Marcus Green reported Louisville "remains a contender" for USA Basketball's HQs, "nearly two months after the organization reportedly was close to announcing a deal with" Glendale, Arizona. But while a Glendale official said that the city is in "regular contact with USA Basketball," Greater Louisville Sports Commission Exec Dir Diane McGraw said that Louisville "hasn't heard from the organization since before" the Beijing Olympics. McGraw: "My guess is they're probably trying to work the deal out with Glendale. In this day and age with what's going on (with the economy), anything can happen" (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 10/9).

LONG-TERM MISSION: DC Mayor Adrian Fenty Thursday discussed his efforts to get the Redskins to built a stadium in the District and said that city officials “want to get that done.” However, he added that is an “an expensive longer-term project and one we are working on.” Fenty: “The Redskins should play in Washington, DC. I think it would be great to have a brand new stadium, one that could accommodate a Super Bowl. Stay tuned.” Fenty added it was a “big mistake letting them leave” and built FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, and said, “We’ll get them back.” Fenty: “I’d be lying and misleading if I said it would happen right away or in the near term, but we just want it to happen as fast as humanly possible” (“Washington Post Live,” CSN, 10/9).

NOTES: The Piedmont Club in Haymarket, Virginia, is "in the process of trying to attract a commitment from the LPGA Tour to stage a full field, 72-hole tournament." The club, which opened in '01, is working with Virginia-based Professional Sports Management to "line up a corporate title sponsor for a possible LPGA event" (WASHINGTON POST, 10/10)....Comcast-Spectacor is installing two interactive I-Walls at the Wachovia Center. Each I-Wall is 24 feet in length and will give Flyers and 76ers fans full control to change the content on two LCD monitors. Both I-Walls will be unveiled at the Flyers regular season home opener against the Rangers on Saturday (Comcast-Spectator).
