La Liga's Villareal To Pay Record $10M Transfer Fee For Altidore

Red Bulls Could Get Record Fee
For Altidore Transfer To Villareal
The MLS Red Bulls have reached transfer terms to send F Jozy Altidore to Spain's La Liga club Villareal for a fee reportedly “close to $10[M],” according to sources with knowledge of the deal. The deal could reach $12M with bonuses. The fee is more than double the amount MLS and the Revolution received for F Clint Dempsey, who was sent to Fulham for $4M in '06. The Red Bulls will keep $6.6-8M from the transfer under new MLS rules allowing clubs to retain two-thirds of transfer fees for soccer-related expenses. The league keeps the other $3.4-4M. Terms of the Altidore deal were first reported by Spanish newspaper Marca (Tripp Mickle, SportsBusiness Journal). In Newark, Frank Giase writes of the Red Bulls' portion of the transfer fee, $500,000 will be "available as allocation money to bring in another top player." Altidore will receive a "fraction of the fee." Red Bulls Sporting Dir Jeff Agoos: "We felt it was the right time for Jozy and we also felt that with the allocation money that we would get, as well as the remaining transfer fee, it would help strengthen the club overall" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 6/5).

BOOST FOR MLS' IMAGE: The STAR-LEDGER's Giase writes the deal "came a bit sooner than expected and the price was bigger than expected." Altidore's signing is "another indication that MLS is viewed as a strong league around the world" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 6/5). MLS Deputy Commissioner Ivan Gazidis: "This is a positive statement about the value placed on the young players we are developing. By a substantial margin, this is the highest transfer fee paid for an MLS player and represents the recognition we have gotten in every quarter of the soccer world. And I want to stress that Villareal's evaluation of Jozy came not from his time with the national teams, but from his play in MLS" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/5). Gazidis said the deal was a "new landmark" for the MLS (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/5).

RONALDO: In London, Richard Morgan reports La Liga club Real Madrid are prepared to offer English Premier League club Manchester United MF Cristiano Ronaldo a "world-record five-year contract worth [US$585,429] per week after tax," which would make Ronaldo the "world's highest-paid footballer" at US$29.27M annually (TELEGRAPH.co.uk).
