Yankees Celebrate After
Winning World Series
The Big Apple is preparing for its first World Series parade in nine years after the Yankees beat the Phillies 7-3 last night to win the franchise’s 27th championship. Fox earns a 15.5 overnight Nielsen rating for the broadcast, up 40% from the Phillies’ title-clincher last year. The Yanks’ win puts a wrap on a playoff season that saw a precipitous rebound in viewer interest after several years of waning television audiences. Bud Selig, buoyed in part by the October (and November) ratings increases, describes this fall as a “tremendous postseason” that capped MLB’s “greatest” season. Looking ahead, Selig is not worried the Yankees’ title could revive the noticeable on-field difference between big- and small-market teams. Meanwhile, the prevailing sentiment immediately after the game is that this title is for George Steinbrenner, the ailing Owner of the team since ’73.
