NBA Season Begins Amid Much Anticipation

The NBA tips off its ’09-10 season tonight seeking to capitalize on the momentum of last season's playoff run. In the first of a special two-day preview, David Stern strikes an optimistic tone, saying, "I've never seen a depth of talent and intensity of coming competition I see for this year." However, navigating the rough economy will be a challenge for many of the league’s clubs, as a dip in ticket and sponsorship sales has forced some teams to pare back expenses on and off the court. Also in today's issue: a variety of writers discuss the league's media landscape, a chat with Clippers President Andy Roeser and a look at marketing around NBA-licensed videogames.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"The New York Times are great people, but they own the Boston Red Sox. They haven't been too happy with our new stadium all year. They really don't like the fact that it's been so successful. They've been writing a lot of negative stuff."

-- Yankees President Randy Levine, on a recent N.Y. Times article detailing cracks in the concrete at the new Yankee Stadium (CNBC, 10/27).
