Donald Trump has created the Trump Million Dollar Invitational, a 100-player,
54-hole golf tournament to be held May 21-26 at the Trump Int’l Golf Club at Raffles
Resort Canouan Island in The Grenadines. The tournament is open to all pro and
amateur golfers over the age of 18 who are not current members of the PGA Tour,
LPGA Tour, Champions Tour, Nationwide Tour or European Tour. The entry fee for
the event is $15,000, and all entry fees will be awarded, resulting in a $1.5M
purse. Entries will be accepted through March 31 at www.trumpmilliondollar.com.
TaylorMade-adidas Golf is the event’s presenting sponsor. TaylorMade is the official
golf equipment sponsor, adidas the official apparel and footwear sponsor and Maxfli
the official ball sponsor (Trump Million Dollar Invitational). On Long
Island, Erik Boland reports ESPN will televise the tournament July 2. Trump, on
whether the event was the result of the success of “The Apprentice”: “Some of
your brethren in the field of sports like [Mavericks Owner] Mark Cuban tried to
do a copy of ‘The Apprentice’ and he went down in ashes, as you know. ... (The
Apprentice) has been a real success. And I think probably that’s why ESPN is going
to get such good ratings” (NEWSDAY, 1/11). USA TODAY’s Michael Hiestand
writes despite ESPN airing the event nearly two months after it’s played, “it
sounds like a fresh, exciting idea” (USA TODAY, 1/11).
