Media Notes

The Seahawks host the Redskins in the NFL playoffs on Saturday, and in DC, Eli Saslow reports, “To avoid insulting native American heritage, the Seattle Times decided to limit the use of the term Redskins in the paper.” The Times “will not use the moniker in headlines or captions. Reporters can use it only once, as a first reference, in all stories.” The Redskins “will be referred to almost exclusively as Washington,” which could be “confusing for local readers who also live in that state” (WASHINGTON POST, 1/11).

BUYING ROSES: USA TODAY’s Michael Hiestand reports ABC’s Rose Bowl coverage “has been the most downloaded video each day” since ESPN/ABC Sports last week launched its partnership with iPods. The game has bested top draws such as ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” and Jessica Simpson’s video for “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” (USA TODAY, 1/11).

MORE SPORTS DOWNLOADS: In London, Saeed Shah reports BSkyB will begin allowing its premium customers to download movies and sports highlights for free on their computers. BSkyB will also make clips of news, sports and entertainment programs available for mobile-phone viewing, and news programs available for iPods and other multimedia players (London INDEPENDENT, 1/11).
