NBA Franchise Notes: Kings Fined For Pregame Video
The Kings were fined $30,000 by the NBA for showing disparaging video of Detroit
on the scoreboard before a game against the Pistons last Tuesday night at Arco
Arena (Mult., 11/15).
HAWKS: In Atlanta, Tim Tucker reported Atlanta Spirit co-Owner Bruce Levenson
“noticed most posters on two [Internet] fan message boards were taking his side
in the dispute” with fellow Spirit co-Owner Steve Belkin. Levenson offered the
fans lower level tickets, which are normally $55, to Thursday’s Clippers-Hawks
game for $10 and 571 fans “took him up on the offer” (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION,
11/13).
BOBCATS: Bobcats Owner Bob Johnson, when asked about the team’s prospects
of becoming profitable: “We don’t talk profitability in the way that you’re talking
about. What we talk about is this is a business that I acquired for the passion
for the sport and one that was a partnership, with the people of Charlotte building
the arena and me buying the team. Now all I have to do is manage it to an extent
that it meets my financial-hurdle obligations and delivers to the city their catalyst
for economic development. And I think it can do that both for myself, my shareholders
and the city” (Erik
Spanberg, CHARLOTTE BUSINESS JOURNAL, 11/11).
WIZARDS: In DC, George Solomon wrote Washington Sports & Entertainment
President Susan O’Malley and her marketing execs “have their work cut out for
them to match last season’s buzz and atmosphere” at Wizards games. One of Solomon’s
colleagues, after attending a recent Wizards game, said, “I don’t see any carry-over
from last season’s playoffs.” O’Malley: “You get buzz from team performance and
providing a good experience at the game. You have to show fans you’re building
a perennial playoff contender; nor does it hurt to have a magnetic star like [G]
Gilbert Arenas” (WASHINGTON POST, 11/13).
CLIPPERS: In an open letter to Clippers Owner Donald Sterling, the L.A.
TIMES’ Mark Heisler wrote, “As a developer, you have all the confidence in the
world, but as a basketball owner, you’re always looking up for the anvil that
must be about to drop on your head. ... You’re always trying to limit your exposure
and cut your losses.” Heisler noted the team’s solid start to the season and wrote,
“If you like the way this is going and you should roll with it.
Give [coach Mike Dunleavy] an extension on top of the one season after this he
has left, to make it clear he’s your man” (L.A. TIMES, 11/13).
