Red Wings Suffering From Fan Apathy; Bruins Target Fans

Red Wings Looking To Create
More Buzz In Hockeytown
The state of Red Wings hockey is examined by Joanne Gerstner of the DETROIT NEWS, who writes “one key thing is missing in Hockeytown: the buzz.” A “number of season-ticket holders have skipped games and sports-talk radio has been dominated by the Lions’ plight.” Also, FSN Detroit this season is averaging a 5.3 cable Nielsen rating for Red Wings games, down from a 6.1 for the ’03-04 season. At weekend games, there are “fewer empty seats in the lower bowl,” but weekday games, “especially Monday nights, have produced an eye-catching number of season-ticket no-shows.” There has been “more of a push by the team to sell single-seat tickets and those returned by the opposing team.” The Red Wings are “actively advertising during their broadcasts, as well as online.” The team also offered free T-shirts to people purchasing tickets. But the Red Wings are still “among the league’s top franchises in terms of attendance.” Every game at Joe Louis Arena so far has officially sold out. Red Wings Dir of Marketing & Season Ticket Sales Lori Shiels: “The early month or so of the season is always a challenge because there are so many things going on with sports, school, things like that” (DETROIT NEWS, 11/15).

CUB REPORTER: Bruins Exec VP & TD Banknorth Garden VP/Business Development Charlie Jacobs “does not expect to turn a profit until probably the 2006-2007 season,” but he does not “rule it out entirely” for this season. Jacobs: “It really depends on how we do with our gate and how deep we go into the playoffs.” In Providence, David McPherson reports the Bruins “have sold out four of the first eight games at the TD Banknorth Garden, with others coming close.” The Bruins, who had a 92% season-ticket renewal rate, have cut ticket prices 5-60% and are offering a $10 ticket for the first time since ’87. Jacobs added that the team also increased by “four or five times” the $500,000-1M it spent on marketing in past seasons (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 11/15).
