Out Of Tune: Dave Checketts’ Deal To Buy Blues Now Dead

Singing The Blues: Checketts Withdraws
From Negotiations For Team
Sports Capital Partners –- the group led by Real Salt Lake Owner Dave Checketts –- has “withdrawn from negotiations” to purchase the Blues and Savvis Center lease, according to Jeremy Rutherford of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. Checketts’ exclusive negotiating rights with the Blues, which he held since September 28, ended with the announcement, allowing Boston-based Game Plan, the group negotiating the sale, “to begin talking with prospective buyers again.” The list of reported potential buyers includes Sansone Group Principal Tony Sansone Jr., National City Bank Regional President Shaun Hayes and Huntleigh McGehee President and UHL Missouri River Otters Owner Michael Shanahan Jr., although Hayes and Shanahan have both said that the $150M price tag for the Blues “is too high.” Rutherford notes Checketts had planned to keep the Blues in St. Louis, and his withdrawal prompts “speculation ... that the team is up for grabs.” But Blues President Mark Sauer said, “This team is staying in St. Louis. There are no talks regarding any out-of-town scenarios” (POST-DISPATCH, 11/15).
