League Notes

An MLB official said that a new MLB-MLBPA drug policy “is imminent and could be announced as early as” today. MLB Exec VP/Labor Relations Rob Manfred and MLBPA General Counsel Michael Weiner are in DC today “to explain the deal” to legislators including U.S. House Government Reform Committee Chair Tom Davis (R-VA). The new policy includes “tougher penalties, testing for amphetamines and an increased number of tests” (MLB.com, 11/14). In N.Y., Murray Chass reports that if U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “finds the agreement satisfactory today,” he and Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) will “probably withdraw” their steroid legislation (N.Y. TIMES, 11/15).

ATP: The AP’s John Pye reported Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal withdrew from the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai because of injuries, leaving Roger Federer as “the only top-five player” in the event, which is “supposed to assemble the world’s eight best players.” Andy Roddick and Marat Safin pulled out prior to the event with injuries, while Lleyton Hewitt chose to remain with his wife, who is expecting the couple’s first child (AP, 11/14).

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Annika Sorenstam, at 35 years old, is the “only player older than 28” among the LPGA Tour’s top ten money winners. Seven of the top ten are 25 or younger (Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 11/14).
