Tapped: Molson Pulls Sponsorship Of Montreal Indy Event

Molson Dry Taps Out Of
Montreal Champ Car Race
Molson’s Molson Dry brand will no longer sponsor the Champ Car World Series Molson Indy Montreal, saying it was “no longer a ‘good fit’ with the race,” according to Donovan Vincent of the TORONTO STAR. The sponsorship agreement, which has been in place since ‘02, gave Molson “pouring rights at the event and ample ad presence before and during the race.” The “fact attendance was down this summer for the event no doubt played a significant role.” But Molson spokesperson Marieke Tremblay said, “There are so many pillars in our marketing decisions. Pouring rights, attendance and the fit with the brand. All these are reasons that can influence (this kind of decision).” Molson will “remain an active sponsor” of the Canadiens and CFL Alouettes. Race spokesperson Norman Prieur said, “The Molson sponsorship was important but is this a major blow? I don’t think so” (TORONTO STAR, 11/15). Molson’s move “follows a similar decision by the brewer two weeks ago to transfer ownership of the Molson Indy Toronto to the Grand Prix Association of Toronto.” That race will still be branded the Molson Champ Car Grand Prix of Toronto (AP, 11/14).
