ABC Posts 12.2/21 Overnight Nielsen Rating For “MNF”

ABC’s “MNF” Sees 13% Ratings Increase
Over Last Year’s Comparable Game
ABC earned a 12.2/21 overnight Nielsen rating for Ravens-Steelers “MNF” last night, up 13.0% from a 10.8/16 for the comparable Dolphins-Jets last season. Ravens-Steelers earned a 20.8 in Baltimore and a 49.8 in Pittsburgh (THE DAILY). “MNF” began with a taped segment featuring Ravens LB Ray Lewis sitting in the Ravens locker room talking with animated cast members from Walt Disney Pictures’ “Chicken Little.” The Chicken Little character delivered the signature line at the end of the segment, “Are you ready for some football?” (“MNF,” ABC, 10/31).

SUPER DECISION: ABC will air a special episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” after its February 5 broadcast of Super Bowl XL. The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER’s Cynthia Littleton notes ABC following its ’03 Super Bowl broadcast also picked a “Sunday sophomore drama with a female lead to run in the coveted post-Super Bowl slot,” showing an episode of “Alias,” which “stumbled in the ratings after a late EST start” (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 11/1).

CHANGING CHANNELS: In DC, Jen Haberkorn reports WJLA-ABC this Sunday night will move the Eagles-Redskins game to sister station WDCA-UPN in order to air its regular lineup, which includes “Desperate Housewives” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” WJLA spokesperson Kathy McGriff: “We have a wildly successful prime-time lineup now. We want to continue to make that available to our audience while they still have the ability — through cable or satellite — to access the Redskins game.” Haberkorn notes WJLA in October ’04 aired the Redskins instead of its regular Sunday night programming and “faced a backlash ... so strong that it overloaded the station’s phone system” (WASHINGTON TIMES, 11/1).

WORKING OVERTIME: NFL Dir of Corporate Communications Brian McCarthy said that the league “plans to ‘crack down’ on Fox extending its NFL postgame show to [8:00pm ET], starting next season.” McCarthy: “We’ll be closely examining and most likely tightening up what networks can and cannot do” (Andy Bernstein, SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/31 issue).
