Make A Date: Curlers To Pose Nude For International Calendar

A new calendar will feature “nude and scantily clad” female curlers, according to Bill Graveland of the CP. Spanish photographer and former curler Ana Arce came up with the idea for the “Ana Arce Team Sponsorship Calendar 2006,” and she also poses in the calendar. Arce: “I think it’s going to change the image of the sport, which is not so nice.” Graveland reports proceeds will be split between the teams of the 12 curlers appearing in the calendar, who represent teams from Denmark, Italy, Spain, England, Poland, Germany and Canada. The Canadian women’s rugby, water polo and cross-country ski teams have all done similar calendars in the past, and the men’s Australian Rules Football and Stade Francais rugby team in Paris have done calendars as well. In April ’04, former world curling champion Colleen Jones “lamented the problem of getting publicity” for the sport. Jones: “I think the women are going to have to curl naked in order to get people out there. ... You’re going to have to hope for an Anna Kournikova to come along to really jazz it up” (CP, 11/1). Canadian curler Christine Keshen, who does not appear in the calendar, said of the sport, “We need something, a boost. We need to sexify curling because sex sells. It’s where the money is. Last year, sponsors were pumping money into curling because there was no (NHL) hockey. Now everyone is hockey crazy again and spiels are getting cancelled because there is no money” (CALGARY SUN, 11/1). The $25 calendar is available at thecurlingnews.com.
