Hamilton Discusses WADA,
Suspension On HBO's "Real Sports"

TRUTH BE TOLD: Last night’s edition of HBO’s “Real Sports” featured cyclist
TYLER HAMILTON, who is currently challenging his two-year suspension from
cycling after testing positive for blood-doping. Hamilton: “I believe that [WADA’s]
number one concern is just about winning, not about the truth.” WADA Chair DICK
POUND, on the validity of WADA’s blood doping tests, said, “Our experts will
not certify if that’s the right word a test for use in drug testing
unless they’re scientifically certain that it’s reliable. We’re not in the business
of trying to convict athletes for doping if they didn’t” (HBO, 7/26).
THIRTY-THIRTY: JAY-Z’s 40/40 CLUB hosted a casino-themed
surprise 30th birthday party for Yankees 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ on Monday. Among
the attendees were Yankees teammates DEREK JETER, JASON GIAMBI,
TINO MARTINEZ and JORGE POSADA, along with 76ers G ALLEN IVERSON,
singer BEYONCE KNOWLES and actors DAMON and MARLON WAYANS.
Each of the 300 guests were given $10,000 in “funny money” with which to gamble,
and the guest who won the most money a sports-marketing consultant known
only as “WES” was given a $25,000 watch from JACOB THE JEWELER (N.Y.
POST, 7/27).
LAW AND ORDER: In Newark, John Martin reports Knicks F TIM THOMAS
has settled a dispute with AHMAD MATARI, who claimed he gave Thomas money,
clothing, a car and gifts while Thomas was playing at Villanova Univ. with the
understanding Thomas would eventually hire him as his agent. U.S. District Judge
JOSEPH GREENAWAY yesterday dismissed Matari’s suit against Thomas, his
agent, ARN TELLEM, and others (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 7/27)....U.S.
District Judge JOAN LENARD ordered Pro Football HOFer O.J. SIMPSON
to pay DIRECTV $25,000 for stealing the company’s satellite signal. Simpson’s
attorney, YALE GALANTER, is planning to appeal the ruling (Mult., 7/27).
