Slingshot: Nike Golf Tops Iron Count With Help Of Past Champions Like Casper |
More golfers “used Nike irons than any other brand at the Masters,” according to James Achenbach of GOLFWEEK, who notes the final iron count had Nike with 17 players, TaylorMade with 15, Ping with 13 and Titleist with 12. TaylorMade “later tried to add an asterisk” to the count, saying in a statement that Nike’s count included “five sets of irons used by past champions.” Achenback notes the former champions were Sandy Lyle, Raymond Floyd, Charles Coody, Tommy Aaron and Billy Casper. Coody, Aaron and Casper “were late additions to the Nike staff.” Rumors circulated that the three “were paid $20,000 apiece to use Nike equipment,” and while Casper played a practice round with a TaylorMade bag, he “switched to a Nike bag” by the opening round. Nike also “is supporting a golf radio show that features Casper’s son, Bobby.” But Casper said, “This has nothing to do with money. I like Nike clubs, and I like what they are doing.” Nike Golf Global Sports Marketing Dir Kel Devlin: “It is absolutely not true that we signed these guys just for the Masters. Billy, for example, will do some corporate outings for us and some other things” (GOLFWEEK, 4/16 issue). GOLFWORLD’s Tim Rosaforte reports Casper and Nike officials “confirmed the [$20,000] dollar amount but said discussions between the two parties regarding an endorsement deal were initiated months before the Masters, and explained that their agreement is longer than a one-week commitment.” Casper, who shot a 105 at the tournament, said the money would go to his Billy Casper Youth Foundation (GOLFWORLD, 4/15 issue). The iron-count win was Nike’s “first of any kind on the PGA Tour” (GOLFWORLD, 4/15 issue).
