WEEK IN REVIEW: The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER’s Nellie
Andreeva noted ABC averaged 15.9 million viewers and a
6.0/15 among adults 18-49 for the week of January 3, marking
its best week in four years with the exception of the week
of the ’03 Super Bowl (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 1/12).
NBA MARKETS: FSN Arizona earned a 7.9/11 for Tuesday’s
Heat-Suns game, marking the fifth time this season that the
net has posted a record-high Suns rating. The game was the
fifth-highest-rated show of any kind, including broadcast
networks, during primetime in the Phoenix market (FSN
Arizona)....Canada’s The Score drew its highest audience
ever for a Raptors game with 139,000 viewers for Kings-
Raptors on January 5 (THE DAILY).
COLLEGE HOOPS: SI’s Grant Wahl notes college basketball
ratings through January 2 are up 12% on CBS, 10% on ESPN and
25% on ESPN2, “despite a proliferation of games.” ESPN’s
Burke Magnus: “In our world double-digit growth is more than
significant. That’s a major change from one season to the
next.” CBS Sports Senior VP/Programming Mike Aresco: “We’ve
never had so many good nonconference games, like Kansas-
Kentucky and Connecticut-North Carolina (on Feb. 13),
scheduled in January and February” (SI, 1/17 issue).
MERCEDES CHAMPIONSHIPS: ESPN earned a 1.5/ (1,372,000
HHs) for last weekend’s coverage of the PGA Tour Mercedes
Championships, up 50% from a 1.0/ (894,000 HHs) in ’04.
Excluding majors, the 2.2 for the tournament’s final round
was the net’s highest-rated golf telecast since a 3.5 for
the final round of the ’00 Bell Canadian Open (ESPN). In
Canada, TSN’s four-round coverage of the Mercedes
Championships averaged 348,000 viewers, making it the most-
watched PGA Tour event ever on the network (TSN).
