OWNING UP: In N.Y., Bill Madden reports Twins Owner
CARL POHLAD “made a courtesy visit” to Yankees Owner GEORGE STEINBRENNER’s
private box during the seventh inning of Twins-Yankees ALDS Game One Tuesday.
After Yankees DH RUBEN SIERRA led off the seventh inning “with what appeared
to be a home run just inside the left-field foul pole.” Steinbrenner “was ecstatic,”
until Pohlad said, “George, I think that ball was foul!” Steinbrenner replied,
“C’mon, Carl, can’t you let us have one run.” Moments later, the umpires reversed
the call and Pohlad “slipped out of the box.” Madden notes that outside of Orioles
Owner PETER ANGELOS, “there is probably no other owner in baseball for
whom George Steinbrenner has more disdain” than Pohlad because while the Twins
benefit from revenue sharing and the luxury tax, Pohlad is “disinclined to re-invest
much of it in player salaries” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/7).

THE POWER OF THE SWOOSH: Nike VP/Global Sports Marketing
ADAM HELFANT ranks 30th on AD AGE’s “Power Players” list, which focuses
on execs whose influence “extends beyond which commercial is placed on which
TV show.” AD AGE writes Nike uses advertising creativity, sponsorship and other
sports-related activities “to help keep the swagger in its swoosh. That puts
[Helfant], 39, in a key position to contribute to the marketer’s success.” Helfant
earlier this year “helped broker a coup,” as Nike wrested away from adidas the
