Out In Left-Field: Fenway Park To Host Democratic Governors

Fenway Will Host Democratic
Governors Association Reception

Fenway Park will host the Democratic Governors Association reception sponsored by UBS Financial Services on July 28 to coincide with the July 26-29 Democratic National Convention, according to Klein & Abraham of the BOSTON GLOBE. Red Sox Chair Tom Werner: "It's a great opportunity to get out of the convention hall and do something in another location. I've never seen someone walk into the ballpark and not smile." Klein & Abraham noted UBS is "among a number of private entities that have contacted the Red Sox to sponsor an event during the convention, ... though the team isn't releasing any details because many events have not been formally booked." Democratic National Convention Chair and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said that Fenway Park "will be a key part of conveying the party's message during" the convention (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/29).

IF YOU BUILD IT: In Boston, Scott Van Voorhis noted the group Save Fenway Park! last week released a study arguing that Fenway Park "could become the top-grossing [ballpark] in baseball with the addition of roughly 5,000 seats." But Werner "questioned" that belief: "I don't think there is ever going to be the revenue in Boston to compete evenly with the [Yankees]. That is not necessarily our goal. Our goal is to compete on the field" (BOSTON HERALD, 5/29).
