Marketplace Round-Up

Quiznos Subs will "likely forgo advertising" during CBS' telecast of the Super Bowl this season. A Quiznos rep said, "There's no commitment. It's not in the plans unless there's an opportunistic buy." Rival Subway is planning an ad for the fourth quarter (BRANDWEEK, 11/10 issue).

RETRO HOCKEY: In Pittsburgh, Rob Rossi reported early results from the NHL's Vintage Hockey Program — retro jerseys worn by six clubs for seven games this season — "have netted such a buzz

from retailers, fans and players, that the league is already planning to expand its list of participating clubs next season." NHL Group VP/Consumer Product Marketing Brian Jennings said, "What's driving the retro trend is two factors: urban kids interested in fashion and Baby Boomers who yearn for things from `back then'" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE REVIEW, 11/9)....Hockey Canada and Bauer Nike Hockey are introducing three Team Canada replica jerseys — '74 (retailing for $120), '76 ($90), and '77 ($110) — beginning November 8. A complete line of apparel will accompany the jerseys, including headwear, T-shirts, and hoodies (Bauer Nike).

MARATHON: DC Mayor Anthony Williams' office "dashed any hopes" of a March '04 marathon when Williams' special assistant Fonda Richardson notified DC Marathon Inc. President Robert Schneider that his proposal "had been nixed." Schneider was one of the volunteers who helped stage the "Unofficial DC Marathon" in March "when race organizer H20 Entertainment suddenly canceled 3 1/2 days before the event." In an e-mail to Schneider, Richardson wrote, "Based on our research, it takes more than six months for an event organizer to produce a successful marathon that will attract national and international interest. In fairness to the city and those interested in responding to the RFP [for an '05 marathon], a 2004 marathon is unrealistic" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 11/9).
