MARATHON: DC Mayor Anthony Williams' office "dashed any hopes" of a March '04 marathon when Williams' special assistant Fonda Richardson notified DC Marathon Inc. President Robert Schneider that his proposal "had been nixed." Schneider was one of the volunteers who helped stage the "Unofficial DC Marathon" in March "when race organizer H20 Entertainment suddenly canceled 3 1/2 days before the event." In an e-mail to Schneider, Richardson wrote, "Based on our research, it takes more than six months for an event organizer to produce a successful marathon that will attract national and international interest. In fairness to the city and those interested in responding to the RFP [for an '05 marathon], a 2004 marathon is unrealistic" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 11/9).
