AEG President Tim Leiweke reportedly reached an agreement with promoter Gary Shaw to hold a heavyweight doubleheader at Staples Center on June 21. The card would feature a title defense by Lennox Lewis along with Mike Tyson in a non-title bout. A majority of the California State Athletic Commission agreed Monday to grant Tyson a license without requiring a hearing. Leiweke: "I'm still stinging from losing De La Hoya-Mosley, but this is a much bigger deal economically" (L.A. TIMES, 4/22). AEG offered $7-8M to land the fight (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 4/22).
HEADS UP: MLB Exec VP/Baseball Operations Sandy Alderson was in Oakland Sunday, the day after Rangers RF Carl Everett was hit in the head with a cell phone, and said, "The reason I am here is we do take this seriously. (Network Associates Coliseum execs) have taken steps to try to correct the situation not only for tonight, but what they can do long-term. Hopefully we can learn from this." Coliseum VP/Operations David Rinetti said that patrols and video monitoring "would be increased in the right-field area" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 4/21).
