People & Personalities: Cherry Expected Back With “HNIC”

HOCKEY: In Toronto, William Houston notes "HNIC" commentator Don Cherry is still unsigned, but Cherry said that he "is certain to be back with the show for the new season." Cherry said that estimates of his "HNIC" salary "have been inflated," and added that he is "paid less than [C$750,000] a year" for his intermission spot, and is "not necessarily seeking that amount on a new deal." But Cherry is "following closely contract talks involving" "HNIC" host Ron MacLean, who is also without a contract. MacLean has retained lawyer Don Meehan as his rep, and is seeking C$600,000 (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 9/13)....In N.Y., Andrew Marchand reports MSG "has a hockey show in the works featuring" ABC analyst John Davidson (N.Y. POST, 9/13).

NFL: USA TODAY's Rudy Martzke writes Fox' new No. 1 NFL broadcasting team of Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Cris Collinsworth "was overlooked somewhat in the attention paid to" John Madden's "MNF" debut. Aikman "offered some one-liners and contributed equally to the analysis with Collinsworth" during last Sunday's Rams-Broncos game, and "didn't hammer anyone but already had showed he would if it's warranted." Buck, on Aikman: "Troy said [Eagles QB] Donovan McNabb was the most inaccurate passer he's ever seen, and it drives [Eagles coach] Andy Reid nuts. They're still talking about that in Philly. Troy's not out to make columns. If something critical needs to be said, he'll say it. But it has to be dictated to by the game" (USA TODAY, 9/13)....ESPN signed former NFLer Eric Allen to a one-year deal, with an option, to co-host ESPN's "Coach's Corner" with Dennis Green, as well as appear on "NFL 2Night," "SportsCenter" and "ESPNews." Allen will also provide analysis on ESPN Radio and ESPN.com (THE DAILY).
