NEXT STEP: DENNIS SWANSON, who is retiring as President & GM of WNBC in N.Y., effective August 1, "surprised many senior NBC executives" yesterday by accepting a job running all the Viacom Inc. stations, which include those of CBS (N.Y. TIMES, 7/16). Swanson will serve as Viacom TV Stations Group COO, the No. 2 position, reporting to President FRED REYNOLDS (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 7/16).
ATHLETIC DIRS: Former OR State Univ. AD MITCH BARNHART yesterday was introduced as the new AD at the Univ. of KY. Barnhart signed a seven-year deal that "could be worth up to $525,000 per year with bonus incentives" (COURIER-JOURNAL, 7/16)....Former Northeastern Univ. AD IAN MCCAW was named the new AD at the Univ. of MA (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/16).
EXECS: The SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Daniel Kaplan writes All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club Dir of TV Marketing IAN EDWARDS plans to resign July 31. Edwards will be replaced by former BBC Deputy Head of Sports JOHN ROWLINSON. Edwards "plans to work as an independent media consultant" and a Rugby Football League dir (SBJ, 7/15). ...The NBDL named KENT PARTRIDGE as Dir of Communications, replacing BRIAN FLINN who will move into the NBA's Communications Group (NBA). ...DONNA SMITH was named Hoosier Park VP/Marketing (THOROUGHBRED TIMES, 7/12)....FSN named DAVE SCALLAN as "Southwest Sports Report" Houston Bureau Chief. Scallan will contribute to FSN's weekly Texans show that begins this fall (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 7/15)....Sonartec Golf promoted Dir of Sales & Marketing KATHY GODWIN to VP. She has been with the company since its inception in '99 (Sonartec Golf)....The London (Ontario) Entertainment & Sports Centre, which will open in October, named DAVE WHITE as GM of all food and beverage services (Global Spectrum).
