Owners Of D Magazine Upset With Recent Article On Tom Hicks

Crow Holdings, the outside owners of D Magazine, is "among those upset" with the publication's current cover story on Rangers/Stars Owner Tom Hicks, headlined "Is Tom Hicks Going Broke?" (see THE DAILY, 6/27), according to Richard Alm of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Crow Holdings CEO Harlan Crow yesterday called the article "scurrilous." Crow Holdings Minority Owner Bob Kaminski added that the article was in "poor taste." But Crow said that "even with control of the purse strings, there's nothing" Crow Holdings or Kaminski "could have done to change what was printed." Crow Holdings' agreement with D Magazine Editor & Publisher Wick Allison "gives him full editorial control." Crow: "The one alternative I have is to close the magazine. That would be an expensive proposition." Allison said that he would "be glad to talk to his financial backers about the Hicks article," but he added that he "stands by the content of the story." Alm notes that Crow called Hicks "earlier this week to express his regrets over the article." Crow: "Tom is a friend of mine and on the board of Crow Holdings." Hicks said that "having made his protest, he's dropping the matter and moving on." Hicks added, "I don't plan to talk about D Magazine ever again" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/28).
