WILLIAMS INDICTED: Former NBAer and "NBA On NBC" analyst JAYSON WILLIAMS was indicted on manslaughter charges today in the shooting death of a limousine driver at his estate. Williams also was indicted on a "series of other charges including aggravated assault and witness and evidence tampering." He could face more than 24 years in prison, and remains free on $270,000 bail (AP, 5/1).

DO-GOODERS: NEWSWEEK's Allison Samuels, as part of a report on the ten-year anniversary of the L.A. riots, notes Buccaneers WR KEYSHAWN JOHNSON, who is from South-Central L.A., has helped build Chesterfield Square — a new shopping center at the corner of Western and Slauson streets. Johnson invested $500,000 in the project and "helped woo investors with his star appeal" (NEWSWEEK, 5/6)....The 2002 CUBS CONVENTION raised a record $323,000 for CUBS CARE, the charitable arm of the team. The convention has raised about $3.5M over the past 17 years, while Cubs Care has given out $700,000 to Chicago-area charities and non-profits this past year (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 4/30)....Hawks F SHAREEF ABDUR-RAHIM created REBOUND AMERICA, a campaign seeking to raise fund for victims of September 11. Abdur-Rahim, who contributed $100 for every rebound, joined with Sonics G GARY PAYTON ($100 for every assist), Heat C ALONZO MOURNING ($100 for every blocked shot), Trail Blazers G DAMON STOUDAMIRE ($25 for every assist) and Heat F BRIAN GRANT ($75 for every rebound). The group raised a total of $217,275 (Hawks).

NAMES: GEAR's Michael Geffner profiles Yankees SS DEREK JETER and writes, "In post-MARIAH mode, he tolerates the media from a wary distance, poker faced and sticking to the script.
