League Notes

AUTO RACING: CART and IRL team Owner Derrick Walker said that he "suspects if his fellow CART owners had it to do again, they would not vote to take the company public." Walker: "In racing, a better model would be a nonprofit organization. For a racing series to grow, you have to put the money you make back into it. But you can't take a long-term view when Wall Street is looking for a short-term return" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 11/9)....NASCAR driver Brett Bodine said that the cost of racing on the Winston Cup tour "has become a major issue" and that "cost-cutting is important." Bodine: "We've warned (NASCAR) as owners, we've all shown our concern that this could happen. We were already on the edge in a good economy of just getting by, and in a down turned economy, it's going to be hard to hang on" (WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL, 11/9).

NOTES: In Seattle, Jayda Evans reports the WNBPA could decide today whether to renew the current CBA. The current CBA expires after the '02 season and the WNBPA and the WNBA "can reopen the agreement by the November 15 deadline." WNBPA President and Storm G Sonja Henning: "We'll hopefully have a decision before then (Nov. 15)"
(SEATTLE TIMES, 11/9)....The HAMILTON SPECTATOR's Ken Peters reports a proposed new indoor football league in Hamilton, Ontario, and several other Canadian cities "has been shelved for at least a year." The Int'l Indoor Football League (IIFL) was scheduled to begin in February '02. But IIFL President Ed Dubaj said that "a combination of factors" led to the postponement (SPECTATOR, 11/9).
