CONSPIRACY THEORIES: In a USA TODAY Sports Cover story, Erik Brady examines conspiracy theories in sports. Sports author DAVID BRADY said sports "are cleaner than ever," partly because "the camera catches everything." BOB COSTAS adds, "The overall feeling that things seem more and more hyped and less genuine and authentic, that feeling I understand. There is a justifiable sense that sports begin to feel more pre-packaged with an increasing emphasis on business and marketing" (USA TODAY, 7/12).

PLAYING IT SAFE: 2001 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ATHLETICS spokesperson Randy Kilburn said that organizers, for the Edmonton event to be held August 3-12, are including 15 condoms in the welcome bags they'll "hand out to the 2,000 athletes." Kilburn said, "Approximately 30,000 [condoms] are available to be placed in the bags. ... We think that a lot of people would agree with this — that it's better to be safe" (EDMONTON SUN, 7/11).

NAMES: In N.Y., Marc Berman reports Kings F CHRIS WEBBER has rehired his former agent, FALLASHA ERWIN, to serve as a consultant (N.Y. POST, 7/12)....In the current issue of SI, the magazine lists the lyrics from Lakers C SHAQUILLE O'NEAL's song “PSYCHE,” off his upcoming album (SI, 7/16 issue)....S.F.-based CSI CAPITAL MANAGEMENT, which handles personal financial, tax and estate planning, as well as investment counseling for sports stars, has signed deals with five of the 28 first-round picks in the NBA draft. The firm "has verbal commitments from four others" (S.F. BUSINESS TIMES, 7/6)....The CONTRA COSTA TIMES named Raiders Owner AL DAVIS as its No. 1 ranked most influential figure in Bay Area sports. From "relocations to litigation, Davis makes people stand up and take notice" (C.C. TIMES, 7/12).
