BLOOMBERG NEWS' Rick Westhead cited an SLOC official as saying that the SLOC "won't sign a contract" with Viisage Technologies Inc. for video surveillance at the '02 Games because it is "too costly and unnecessary." Viisage CEO Tom Colatosti said that he "had hoped to win a contract worth" $500,000-1M. SLOC COO Fraser Bullock said that the technology is not "needed because of other security measures at the Games" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 7/11)....The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Copetas & Thurow profile outgoing IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch and write that the IOC "isn't prepared to drop the curtain on the Samaranch era," as he is expected to be named honorary IOC "president for life" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/12)....AROUND THE RINGS reports, "Documents have been signed creating Olympic Broadcast Services, a Swiss corporation with majority ownership by the IOC that will operate the host broadcasting operation of the Olympic Games from 2008 onward. Currently, each host city is responsible for that duty." Manolo Romero, who will head the new company, said that the company will start up after the '02 Games (AROUND THE RINGS, 7/11 issue).
