RED SOX SCOOP: In Boston, Scott Van Voorhis reports in a "secretive meeting months ago," Red Sox CEO John Harrington tested Mayor Thomas Menino's reaction to potential new team owners seeking to build a ballpark on a site other than the proposed Fenway-area location. Van Voorhis adds "many observers have written off" the Fenway site as "financially unworkable," despite a state aid package passed last summer (BOSTON HERALD, 7/12).

GOING A DIFFERENT ROUTE: Chiefs Chair Jack Steadman, on why the team will not use the NFL's stadium loan financing plan to help pay for renovations to Arrowhead Stadium: "That is an option, but we can't do that in Arrowhead. The loan program is a good one, but it is better suited for teams looking to build a new stadium" (K.C. STAR, 7/12).
