LEAGUE NOTES

          At the NBPA meetings in the Bahamas, which ended
     yesterday, players "opposed" a restriction on the age of
     incoming players.  The players also voted that no player
     "will be exempt from paying the so-called escrow tax," which
     "will kick in if owners pay more than" 55% of BRI to the
     players in the 2000-01 season (AP, 7/9)....Walter Payton
     bought a minority share of an expansion AFL team that begins
     play near Chicago in 2001 (WASH. POST, 7/8)....The second
     segment of MLB interleague play begins today (MLB)....2000
     PGA Championship Vice Chair Stan Curtis said that 81% of the
     event's 33,000 tickets have been sold for the event at
     Valhalla Golf Club (BUSINESS FIRST OF LOUISVILLE, 7/5).
