Brees Jersey Ranks No. 17
At NFLShop.com |
The "amount of new Saints-related T-shirts and apparel flying off store shelves and out of art market stalls these days is rising in direct proportion to the team's scoreboard," according to Susan Langenhennig of the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE. The Saints improved to 11-0 after defeating the Patriots 38-17 last night, and officially-licensed team apparel is "hot." NFL Corporate Communications Coordinator Joanna Hunter said purchases of Saints merchandise at NFLShop.com are up 10% over '08, and the team ranks in the "middle third of league sales" at the site. Hunter added that sales of Saints QB Drew Brees' No. 9 jersey "are up nearly" 53% over last year, and he "now ranks 17 on the list of best-selling players' jerseys at NFLShop.com." But Langenhennig reports it is "not only the official team gear that catches the eye." T-shirts that include phrases like "What Would Breesus Do?" "cleverly get their message across but steer wide enough to clear licensing issues." Josh Harvey, owner of New Orleans-based T-shirt shop Storyville, said, "There's always a huge market for official team jerseys, but people here also like something different. ... In a lot of ways, the more creative, the more novel and the more irreverent, the better." Langenhennig notes even "high-end retailers are drawn" to the Saints' success. Jewelry designer David Yurman "recently created a fleur-de-lis charm" exclusively for New Orleans-based Aucoin Heart Jewelers. The store "held a preview party for the design and donated 100[%] of proceeds from sales of the piece and 10[%] of all David Yurman sales to the Brees Dream Foundation" (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 12/1).
