Maple Leafs Forced To Remove Logos From Toronto Sidewalks

Toronto Says Maple Leafs' Sidewalk
Ads Would Set Bad Precedent
The Maple Leafs' logo and the slogan "Spirit Is Everything" were stencilled on downtown Toronto sidewalks earlier this season, but they "were all to be gone" by last Friday, according to Rosie DiManno of the TORONTO STAR. The city of Toronto last Wednesday gave Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) "48 hours to clean up their act." Toronto Traffic Services Department's Angie Antoniou said, "You can't deface public property. We don't want sidewalks to become advertising space and this would have set a bad precedent." Grassroots Advertising VP Mike Gillissie, whose agency subcontracted the job from MLSE's ad purchasing firm, said, "We thought it was a cool thing to do but now the city says we can't. So they're coming down." MLSE Exec VP & COO Tom Anselmi: "I don't disagree with the city at all. You can't have everyone painting signs on the sidewalk. Our media company bought this through a third party. It sounded like a new and unconventional way of getting our brand out there. We were under the impression the company had secured the rights to do it because that's what they told us. But if it's not allowed then we shouldn't be allowed" (TORONTO STAR, 11/27).
