This Week's Newsmakers: Wie's Win Resonates Throughout Sport

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers:

Wie's Win Provides A Much Needed
Boost For The LPGA
WINMICHELLE WIE -- Her first LPGA tournament victory is a welcome relief for the 20-year-old and the tour. After so much hype and promise, Sunday’s win brings instant positive attention to the golfer, and she relishes it all with a sense of joy and relief. The performance captures strong ratings on Golf Channel and significant print and Web coverage. It also sets the LPGA up nicely to start '10 with serious momentum.

LOSE: BUD ADAMS -- This is too easy. Last Sunday starts with ROGER GOODELL visiting LP Field for a Legacy Game against the Bills, and standing next to Adams as the two wave from the Owner's suite as the crowd stands and cheers Adams’ legacy as team owner. But hours later, Adams is taped flipping the bird to the Bills sideline and pays for it later with a hefty $250,000 fine and national ridicule.

DRAWWSOP – The series receives strong media buzz following the win of 21-year-old Joe Cada, who shows personality and flair on the talk-show circuit, including with David Letterman. The event boasts some strong numbers despite the continued economic slump -- especially in Vegas. But the departure of Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack after a four-year term is a setback. Pollack, who founded THE DAILY in ’94, unquestionably strengthened the event and brand, building key marketing and media deals and developing respect among the participants. His leadership turning the WSOP into a viable sports property will be missed.
