Blackhawks' McDonough Has High Expectations For Team, Staffers

| McDonough Helping Rejuvenate Hockey In Chicago |
Since Blackhawks President JOHN MCDONOUGH "began rejuvenating the hockey culture in Chicago" in November '07, "no detail has been too small," according to David Haugh of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. McDonough has helped "historically transform the expansion-like franchise he inherited into [the] most vibrant sports organization in the city." His "reputation as a taskmaster" has become "as well established as his as a marketer extraordinaire." Blackhawks Senior Dir of Hockey Administration AL MACISAAC: "John has great expectations and for people who aren't ready for the challenge, he might be hard to work for. But for people cut from the same cloth, he's not." McDonough and Blackhawks GM STAN BOWMAN "join about 10 big-ticket corporate sponsors in a suite ... less than an hour before each home game," and such access to the front office "makes the sponsors feel more connected with the product and reinforces to the team's business side that the walls in the organization have been torn down." One of the "first subtle yet significant restructuring jobs McDonough did was put the team's hockey and business operations under the same umbrella so they regularly attend the same meetings and hear the same message." MacIsaac: "Nobody else in the league does it like this." Haugh notes McDonough also "honors the boundaries between the board room and the dressing room," and he "will be the first to tell you he knows what he doesn't know, which helps keep the missteps to a minimum." He "spent two days this week in Montreal picking the brain of Canadiens officials" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/19).
