Developers Readying Proposals For New NBA Kings Arena

Johnson (r) Says Top Ideas For New Kings
Arena Will Be Presented Early Next Year
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson "released what he called a 'request for offerings' Tuesday for a new arena that could be home" to the NBA Kings, and by Thursday, "at least two developers, including the owner of the downtown railyard, said they plan to respond, and others were expressing interest," according to Lillis & Bizjak of the SACRAMENTO BEE. A volunteer task force "will accept ideas between now and Dec. 24, then take 90 days choosing the best proposals." Johnson said that the "top ideas will be presented to the City Council early next year." The task force is "expected to be made up of seven to 12 people, including those in law, finance, construction and design." Johnson said that he "will name the members next week." Lillis & Bizjak note as "part of their proposals, developers must include: a design for an arena; a financing plan -- including equity sources and whether public money would be used; a timeline for construction; a location; and the number of jobs the arena would create." Johnson has said that he "will not favor plans that involve new taxes." Thomas Enterprises VP/Development Suheil Totah, whose company is the developer for most of the downtown railyard, said his group is "definitely going to be submitting a proposal." Developer Gerry Kamilos also is "working on an arena plan," and one proposal "already is on the table -- to build an arena at Cal Expo" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 11/13).

OPERATION OVER: SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's John Lombardo reports the Kings have "no plans to continue 'Operation Sellout,'" which enlisted the help of Sacramento business leaders to help sell tickets for the team's opening games, during the rest of the season. Kings co-Owner Joe Maloof: "We did it for two games and built some momentum and we are going to keep engaged with the business community. We have developed a closer relationship with the business community than what we have had in the past." Lombardo notes the team announced a sellout of 17,317 for their home opener against the Grizzlies on November 2, though Maloof "admitted to at least a 10[%] no-show factor." But the team's November 4 game against the Hawks was "far short of a sellout, with an announced attendance of just 11,751" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 11/9 issue).
