NFL Players Not Renewing Topps' Trading Card License For '10

Topps Has Been Constant
Partner Of NFL Since '68
NFL Players, the marketing and licensing arm of the NFLPA, yesterday confirmed that it "will not renew Topps' trading card license for 2010," according to Tracy Hackler of BECKETT.com. The move to "reduce football manufacturers has been rumored for months and will take place officially" when NFL Players' current agreements with Panini, Topps and Upper Deck expire at the end of February. NFL Players' decision to "move forward with just Panini and Upper Deck comes after months of thorough investigation and evaluation of a current football card marketplace still reeling from the troubled economy" (BECKETT.com, 11/9). Topps has offered "some kind of pro football set every season since 1956," and Topps has been a "constant partner" of the NFL since '68 (SPORTSCOLLECTORSDAILY.com, 11/10). PRO FOOTBALL TALK's Mike Florio notes while Topps "could have continued without the NFL license," it is "fairly difficult to sell football cards without the names and likenesses of football players on them" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 11/10).
