Hornets Owner George Shinn Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

Shinn Says He Remains Healthy,
Will Maintain His Normal Schedule
Hornets Owner George Shinn "has been diagnosed with prostate cancer," according to Jimmy Smith of the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE. Shinn Friday in a statement said that he "remains healthy, will maintain his normal schedule and focus on beating the disease while actively pursuing a championship performance by his team on and off the court." Shinn: "This is not the first obstacle that I have had to overcome in life, but it will be another one that will be conquered." Shinn in an e-mail to Hornets officials noted that "bone and CT scans performed on Friday indicated the malignancy has not spread." Shinn is "still undergoing additional tests and it is unclear just what his course of treatment will entail" (NOLA.com, 11/6). Shinn "will focus his energies on conquering the disease with a yet-to-be-determined course of treatment at an undisclosed, out-of-town location where Shinn is still undergoing diagnostic tests" (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 11/7). In Charlotte, Tom Sorensen conducted the first interview with Shinn since the diagnosis, and Shinn said he was "scared to death" when he was diagnosed, but added he was "confident" about his recovery. Shinn said that he was "moved by the more than 100 e-mails he received Friday, when the cancer became public, from the NBA, and especially, from fans and friends in New Orleans." Shinn: "I'm as happy as I have ever been. I care about the people and they appear to care about me. ... I'm still full of life and fight. I have so much that I want to do. I want to start [a] church. I want to be part of the community. And I want to be a better person" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 11/8).
