Stores Disappoint Yankees Fans By Not Stocking Matsui Gear

Yankees World Series Gear Flying Off
Of Shelves At Modell's Sporting Goods
Modell's Sporting Goods and The Sports Authority "didn't pre-order" World Series championship gear featuring Yankees DH Hideki Matsui, who was named World Series MVP, "crushing Yankee fans who went gaga for Godzilla," according to Weichselbaum & Schapiro of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Modell's CEO Mitch Modell on Thursday said of Matsui, "He took New York by storm -- we weren't prepared for it. He caught us by surprise. They are being flown in as we speak. We should have them in the next 48 hours." Despite the "lack of Matsui gear, sporting goods stores were mobbed by Bomber fans clamoring for everything Yankee," as "hats, sweatshirts, even Yankee-emblazoned Pilsner glasses flew off the shelves" at the Modell's location on Chambers St. in N.Y. (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/6). Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Kathleen Lynn reports sporting goods stores "started getting shipments of championship T-shirts and hats" on Tuesday, so by the time the Yankees clinched the World Series Wednesday night, retailers "were ready for fans eager to celebrate." Modell's on Thursday "brought in workers from other East Coast stores ... to handle the rush." Wayne Riedl, Manager of a Modell's location in Paramus, New Jersey, said, "You wouldn't know there's a recession when you see how people spend" (Bergen RECORD, 11/6).
