NASCAR Dir of Corporate Communications Ramsey Poston said that "despite the latest setback in signing a new race promoter, racing at the Milwaukee Mile in 2010 remains a possibility." In Milwaukee, Kallmann & Walker note Historic Mile LLC informed State Fair Park Tuesday that it "could not secure the financing necessary and would withdraw as the prospective promoter" of the track. The State Fair Park immediately "turned its attention to a group led by" former race promoters Frank and Dominic Giuffre, who were "rejected in August." The racetrack is "on the agenda of a fair board meeting Friday." Poston said, "We're in touch with the fair board, and Milwaukee is a very important market to us and we're considering every option available"  (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 11/5).

Newcastle's Stadium Renamed After Mike
Ashley's Sports Direct For Next Six Months
WHAT'S IN A NAME? In London, George Caulkin reports for the next six months, English soccer club Newcastle United's stadium will be renamed sportsdirect.com@St James' Park. The rebranding of the venue is "being seen as one more insult in a long period of humiliation that began in 2007," when Sports Direct Owner Mike Ashley bought the club. Petitions have been "set up -- the Newcastle United Supporters Trust has collected more than 16,000 names -- and demonstrations are planned for Saturday's game against Peterborough United" (LONDON TIMES, 11/5). Sources indicated that Sports Direct, "whose branding is already prominent at the stadium, will not pay any more for its sponsorship" (LONDON TIMES, 11/5).

PUBLIC MONEY: The AP reports the Maryland Board of Public Works has approved about $24M in "stadium-related projects, including a new scoreboard at M&T Bank Stadium." The new scoreboard "will cost about" $4M to "replace the one that has been in place since the stadium opened" in '98. The board yesterday also approved $10M to "make structural improvements at Camden Yards" (AP, 11/5).
