USA TODAY'S MARTZKE SAYS ENOUGH OF THE "CHEESECAKE"

Noting the appearance of CBS' college football sideline
reporter Jill Arrington, who wore a "black tank top" during
the VA Tech-Univ. of Miami game Saturday, and ABC's "MNF"
sideline reporter Melissa Stark, USA TODAY's Rudy Martzke
writes, "Why has cheesecake become vogue in NFL and college
football telecasts? The suggestive shots and clothing
didn't start with Stark, who came to ABC with substantial
reporting credentials at ESPN and HTS. It started with
ABC's moving camera showing a full body shot of Stark when
she first appears on the ['MNF'] telecasts." ABC Sports
VP/Media Relations Mark Mandel defended the network's camera
shots of Stark: "We have a lot of new cameras and angles
throughout the telecast, not just on Melissa." Martzke also
noted the presence of Jillian Barberie on Fox: "What the
networks should worry about is sending the wrong message to
women who want to be accepted as serious sportscasters and
reporters. Cut the cheesecake parade" (USA TODAY, 11/6).
JILLIAN'S: On "Fox NFL Sunday," James Brown introduced
Barberie by saying, "Mrs. Brett Barberie, otherwise known as
Jillian Barberie, is here with today's weather." Brown, to
Fox' Terry Bradshaw, "Why do you have the smile on your
face, Terry?" Bradshaw: "[This is] my favorite part of the
show." Barberie: "Thank you, T.B. Watch how I don't behave
myself just because my husband is visiting today."
Barberie, on weather patterns around the NFL cities:
"That's going to produce a very tight pressure gradient --
calm down Terry" ("Fox NFL Sunday," Fox, 11/5).
NFL NOTES: In N.Y., Phil Mushnick wrote while NFL
pregame shows have "become less filling and in bad taste,"
CBS' "The NFL Today" on Sunday held "some promise of being
adult-worthy" with Armen Keteyian's profile of Broncos LB
Bill Romanowski. Mushnick: "At last, a promising reason to
watch an NFL pregame show. Who knows? This could start a
trend" (N.Y. POST, 11/5)....In Richmond, Jerry Lindquist
noted The Bonham Group survey which showed a majority of
"MNF" viewers want Dennis Miller to return: "Mark it down:
It will be a one-and-done season for ['MNF' analyst Dennis]
Miller. This is a failed experiment. Nobody knows that
better than Miller himself" (RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH, 11/6).
