L.A. City Council Backs Sign Permits For AEG's L.A. Live Complex

L.A. City Attorney Says Large Wall Signs
Violate City's New Ban On Outdoor Ads
The L.A. City Council Friday voted unanimously to reject L.A. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich's "legal advice and back six controversial sign permits" at AEG's L.A. Live, according to Willon & Reston of the L.A. TIMES. Trutanich had said that the "large wall signs violated the city's new ban on outdoor ads." The move comes after AEG President & CEO Tim Leiweke last week "accused Trutanich of trying to 'bully' the company by blocking signs for its Regal Cinemas before the grand opening Tuesday." Leiweke said that AEG "would be forced to take legal action against the city if the permits were blocked, saying it would put hundreds of millions of dollars worth of sponsorship agreements at risk." AEG "plans to put up four big movie posters -- including at least one for the Michael Jackson documentary 'This Is It,' which premieres Tuesday -- and signs for L.A. Live sponsors Coca Cola and Toyota" (L.A. TIMES, 10/24). In L.A., Steve Lopez wrote Leiweke "should know a bully when he sees one," as AEG "has bullied its way into one sweetheart deal after another, from tax advantages to regulatory exemptions for environmental impact reports and advertising." Lopez: "Not that it takes a tough guy to topple a Los Angeles public official. Money works better than bullying, anyway, and AEG drops it at City Hall like confetti" (L.A. TIMES, 10/25).
