Bucks Could Leave Without New Or Renovated Bradley Center

Bradley Center Chair Feels Arena Is Outdated
Compared To NBA's More Modern Facilities
Bradley Center Chair Ulice Payne Jr. said that losing the Bucks is a "'real possibility' if a new arena is not built or major renovations of the Bradley Center are not completed over the next decade," according to Mark Kass of THE BUSINESS JOURNAL OF MILWAUKEE. Payne: "When you consider the condition of the building, the trends in the NBA and the need to make further, significant enhancements to the Bradley Center, it is painfully obvious that as nice as the Bradley Center is, it doesn't measure up to the modern standards of other major arenas." Payne said Bradley Center "can't function as an NBA building for too many more years" in its current condition. Payne: "Absent constructing a new building, the Bradley Center will require major, costly renovations and expansions to provide the needed revenue-generating sources that a modern NBA building requires. The options include expanded parking revenues, new pre- and post-event dining choices, adjacent development and other fan-friendly enhancements. Looking at the building today, the Bradley Center just does not have the revenue generators that other modern venues offer to their tenants." Payne noted other communities "want an NBA team, and some are building new facilities and competing aggressively for NBA franchises." Payne said there are "too many unknown variables to allow either the Bradley Center or the Bucks to enter into a long-term lease," adding it is "more likely that we will continue to operate on a year-to-year agreement until the bigger issues get resolved" (THE BUSINESS JOURNAL OF MILWAUKEE, 10/16 issue).
