Media Notes

In Philadelphia, Bob Brookover reports the NFL yesterday moved the kickoff of the November 1 Giants-Eagles game from 4:15pm ET to 1:00pm to accommodate a potential World Series Game Four at Citizens Bank Park that night. The league "looked out for itself and Fox" with the change. Giants-Eagles "would have drawn decent TV ratings as Fox's national game," but "not nearly the same ratings as Fox will get" for Vikings-Packers, which swapped timeslots with Giants-Eagles and marks QB Brett Favre's return to Green Bay (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 10/14).

KICKING IT UP A NOTCH: On Long Island, John Jeansonne writes in a "new multi-channel universe in which events traditionally ignored by the major networks have become widely available, a global sporting awareness is creeping into our jock landscape." Univ. of Georgia political science professor Christopher Allen: "They may not cover soccer much on SportsCenter, but ESPN has a great soccer Web site. In the age of alternative news sources, there’s a thriving underground niche community that can get all the information about soccer it wants" (NEWSDAY, 10/14).

HISTORICAL PACKAGE: USA TODAY's Mike Dodd reports MLB Productions "has dug into the archives to produce the entire run of 65 World Series films in a DVD set, accompanied by a 58-page commemorative book with the foreword by" broadcaster Bob Costas. The 20-disc set boasts 50 hours of restored footage, and it will be on sale in stores November 10 for a suggested retail price of $229.95. Dodd notes the first Series film was produced in '43 (USA TODAY, 10/14).

HITTING THE RHODE: WRNI-AM's Scott MacKay reports long-time Providence Journal Sports Editor Arthur Martone is "leaving the newspaper to take a job" at CSN New England as the channel is "expanding its sports web site coverage." Boston Globe NHL reporter Kevin Paul Dupont, Boston Herald Red Sox reporter Sean McAdam and NBCSports.com NFL reporter Tom Curran are "reportedly joining Martone in the new venture." There is no word on Martone's replacement with the newspaper (WRNI.org, 10/13).
