AirTran Inks Deal With Falcons, Unveils Team-Themed Plane

Falcons, AirTran Unveil Plane Bearing Team's
Colors, Logo As Part Of New Sponsorship
The Falcons and Atlanta-based AirTran Airways yesterday unveiled a plane "bearing the team's colors and logo as part of a new sponsorship," according to Kelly Yamanouchi of the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION. AirTran's deal with the team includes "joint promotions, signs at the Georgia Dome, billboards and other advertising." AirTran "didn't disclose how much it paid for the Falcons sponsorship or how long the deal will run." This is the "first time the airline has had a plane specially painted for a sponsorship," with the design costing "roughly $160,000." The airline also "plans to paint planes for sponsorships" with the Colts and Ravens. AirTran has endorsement deals with a "roster of individual athletes," including Falcons QB Matt Ryan and Thrashers G Kari Lehtonen, who "pitch the carrier from billboards or in TV spots." The Falcons sponsorship is "only skin-deep," as the team "doesn't fly to away games on AirTran because the carrier's planes are too small." The team instead "continues to charter flights on Delta." But Yamanouchi notes Delta "pulled out of the Falcons sponsorship earlier this year," saying that it was "aligning more with baseball." Delta continues to sponsor the Braves, Vikings, Twins, Mets, and Yankees, among other teams (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 10/14).
